No that's this model full name then SME3009 'Improved' S II (= with fixed headshell) and S 2 (= detachable headshell).

It's unimproved with fixed headshell, so balance should be fine :-)

Even more so since I DIY tweaked converted it gradually into a heavy-heavy mass tonearm ! Some might find my setting ways un-proper, but for me it worked as to this day. The rider weight setting is crucial to be sure that the rest on the knife edge bearing is well balanced for optimal vertical bearing movements. Important to know that bias skating force is stronger in run in groove and that the string at 90° of the scaled rod gives the stronger anti-skate force and decreasing closing down or opening up the angle. Now, what headshell is your cartridge fixed on ? Those 2M headshells are of the heavy kind and if your counterweight can cope with all that mass addition, I'd be surprised as this combo weights some 23 grams and when I had my Denon DL-102 cartridge (17 grams) fitted on my SME 'Improved' S II, the counter weight was pulled back to it's max !Īnyway, for the settings of both my rider weight and anti-skating I don't go by numbers but by tests and narrowing down the " target window".

So likely if the follow up of your phono set-up is of the clear and neutral kind sounding, you should benefit from some extra mass addition on your tonearm. The 2M's are of the medium compliant kind. SME3009 'Improved' S 2 with detachable headshell then ? Still considered of the light effective mass tonearm to fit high compliant catridges.
